A living natural soundscape. Generative, never repeating, carefully designed and deeply grounded in ecoacoustics. TOTEMPHONIA simulates living ecosystems instead of looping field recordings. Every play session is unique — which species are calling, how often, from which direction, at what time of day, in what season, under what weather. The soundscapes are constructed with a stem-based, generative audio engine. Every single voice is assembled in stages and spatially positioned for a fully immersive and ever-changing simulation of life. Listening to natural soundscapes settles the nervous system and restores attention. It calms the cluttered mind, fosters focus, and can even support creativity. This is well-established in psychoacoustic and ecoacoustic research and the app is built around it. The name comes from a concept by bioacoustician Bernie Krause: the totem soundscape is the natural acoustic landscape each of us feels emotionally drawn to. For some it's waves on a shore. For others, a river through a forest. This app is a place to find yours. HOW IT WORKS 23 sound elements across four ecosystems — Temperate Forest, Ocean, Zen Garden, Rainforest — each with two controls. Intensity determines which species are active, how densely they call, and how the soundscape evolves: from a lone owl at midnight to a full nine-species dawn chorus. Volume sets the overall level. Every voice carries its own stereo position, distance, and spatial movement. The full resolution of which is designed to be heard through headphones. Mix the elements freely to compose your own soundscape. Save scenes as presets and recall them whenever you need them — a focused work environment, a rain mix for sleep, a full dawn chorus for the morning. Build exactly what you want to step into. Four real locations, each running in its own local wall-clock time, weather, and season: the European Black Forest, the Amazon River in Brazil, Feridhoo Island in the Maldives, and a temple garden in Matsumoto, Japan. A bundled climate database drives day-night cycles, seasonal voice changes, weather events, lunar phases, and ocean tides. Open the app and hear how each place actually sounds, right now. The timer here isn't a stopwatch with sounds. It's a small story that unfolds in real time. Sounds come and go like real-world events. A 30-minute meditation can pass through a slow rainstorm — distant thunder, rain swelling and fading, frogs holding the night. A 5-minute break walks you through a rainforest morning and back out. A 45-minute sleep arc settles a busy forest dusk into deep night. Fifteen hand-picked presets are designed scene by scene for specific moments — waking, focus, meditation, sleep, decompression, breaks. Soundscape Arc applies the same narrative engine to your own scenes. Alarms work the same way. A 7:30 AM Forest Sunrise alarm is a slow brightening: pre-dawn quiet, the first thrush, then the chorus, then you. The actual sound of morning. FOR EVERY KIND OF HEARING Some ears find bright high frequencies — sharp bird calls, certain insect chirps — genuinely uncomfortable. The Noise Sensitivity filter in Settings softens those frequencies while preserving the soundscape's natural character. Built in from the start, because not everyone hears the same way. THE STUDIO TOTEMPHONIA is the work of Totemphonia Studio Berlin — an indie studio of one, founded and run by Kilian Fix. The focus of the studio is the restorativeness of natural soundscapes, and other potential benefits of listening to nature for mindfulness and well-being. Eighteen months of design, listening, and engineering, hand-built in Berlin by someone who wanted nature soundscape apps to actually sound like nature. No subscriptions. Nothing tracked, nothing sent anywhere. Pay once. Yours forever, including future updates with more sounds, new places, and refined simulations.
